Turkey Tails Forest School

Let’s Get Outside!

PROGRAMS

Nature-based learning

The beauty of the natural world offers children inspiration to learn from. Colours, patterns, species, and natural phenomena are being discovered everyday that make us want. to learn more about our environment and each other.

Development through free play

Our programs are child-led. Depending on the curiosities of the child, the weather, and the surroundings, play looks different everyday. Free play fosters creativity, leadership, and collaboration.

Connection to community

There are so many people in our community who are passionate about all things related to nature. We collaborate with artists, elders, storytellers, scientists, and anyone who wishes to share their knowledge with us!

Learning and playing on Mi’kma’ki

Our programs are offered on the unceded and unsurrendered traditional lands of the Mi’kmaq People governed under the Peace and Friendship Treaties. We are located in Kespukwitk, Mi’kma’ki (Lands End District including Southwestern Nova Scotia). We acknowledge that our land-based learning programs are taking place on stolen land. The practices and values of Turkey Tails are centred on a lens of decolonization including repairing our relations with the land and Mi’kmaw folks who have stewarded this land since time immemorial.

Forest school made accessible for everyone

Turkey Tails is a registered society and non-profit organization. We wish for this programming to be accessible to anyone who wishes to participate. Every child has the right to play and learn from the land.

Parent Testimonials

“Attending Forest School has been an amazing opportunity for our child. It has given her confidence in her abilities, an appreciation for nature, and most of all it has allowed her sense of wonder to flourish. She comes home dirty, tired and happy - exactly the way a kid should be.”

“Forest school was a magical experience for our child. There were so many opportunities for discovery and learning and relationship building in the exhilarating and nurturing environment of the outdoors with inspired facilitators, who provided so many learning opportunities, and also the freedom to explore and create.”

“The benefits of forest school and outdoor play cannot be underestimated. From self esteem, peer cooperation, to including forest play and learning in your daily life, forest school has been a vital part of both of my children’s education and upbringings. My children love their participation in forest school and look forward to the next incarnation! A forest program is integral to a well rounded child.”
